Keeping it LoCal
Before I held the position of performance curator at The Loft and during the application process for said job I was asked to create an example vision of what programming in the space might look like should I be at the helm. That vision included a regular event that would highlight food and drink, in particular local and sustainable practices around food and drink and the benefits to our taste buds, bellies and communities.
I’ve been lucky enough over the years to work at some of the finest and most interesting restaurants in the UK. One of these was Fifteen Cornwall. A concept by Jamie Oliver Fifteen provides incredible career opportunities to young people in need of some guidance and opportunity and to boot champions and serves some of the finest locally sourced produce. My time at Fifteen gave me a real boost in appreciation for supporting local produce, I was able to feel proud knowing where everything on a plate came from and the taste that came along with those edible flowers from down the road.
Three years since starting at The Loft, over 250 events and 6000 miles away from my days at Fifteen I was contacted by Scott Ballum, the editor in chief of Sheepless.org who wanted to see about the possibility of screening a documentary film about the movement of young independent farmers in America - The Greenhorns. Timing couldn’t have been more perfect, finally a great opportunity to host an event I’ve been thinking about since 2008 - with some outstanding partners!
So, this Tuesday - April 19th beginning 6.30pm The Loft and Sheepless will be presenting an evening of food, farmers, film and conversation. Guests can enjoy a three course meal with produce from Suzies Farm carefully cooked by Zanzibar @ The Loft, followed by The Greenhorns and topped off with a Q & A with Robin and Lucilla from Suzie’s Farm, Jay Porter of The Linkery and El Take it Easy and Misha Johnson of Wild Willows Farm and San Diego Roots with an event I hope is the first of many.
